For those of you who know me, we have quite a menagerie of animals up at our KOA Kampground in Gunnison, CO.
Say hello to ….

But since we don’ t have any Roosters or Pigs , I thought I would put some together on this week’s Tablescape!

I’ve always been fond of vintage kitchen utensils. I found this scoop and single beater in a local thrift shop. They both have great chippy handles.

This adorable little piggy dish was a hostess gift that I received last summer. I love the color and shape. So whimsical. Another farm animal that I would like to see remain on the table rather than in the yard.

Family Room Mantel & Shelves: Winterized

I spent sometime this week putting together some displays in our Family Room. The Holiday items had been removed several weeks ago and they were “screaming” for some Winter Accessorizing. I kept the Mantel simple pulling from items around the house. Not a lot of color, I will save that for the Spring.
The Mantel Clock is from my Grandfather’s Estate. It is an old fashioned “wind up” clock. No real markings except the word Foreign on the face plate.
The book ends were from Pottery Barn outlet in Lake Elsinore, CA. We stopped there last year when I visited her our in San Diego. Not many Pottery Barn Outlets out west.
This is only one side of the two built in shelves that flank the fireplace in the mantel. Not quite done with the other side.

Better late then never

This year I admit I planted my Holiday Bulbs a little late. (How’s after Thanksgiving sound?) Oh well, I hung in there and my Amaryllis finally bloomed this week. The Paper Whites grew much faster, they bloomed the week of Christmas. I hope to remember next year to plant them around the first of November. I still love the look!

The Paper Whites grew soooo tall. Can you see them up above the window valence?

It is so cold and dreary out today. Still lots of snow on the ground. My poor trees are so bare.

Go Denver Bronco’s

I realize this is a little “unconventional tablescape”, but I wanted to give a shout out to our Denver Bronco’s. My husband and son are DIE HARD Bronco’s fans, and now they are both HUGE fans of Tim Tebow. His picture has been on our refrigerator all season.

So here’s a Mile Hi Salute to the Denver Bronco’s! Best of Luck this weekend against the New England Patriots.

Our centerpiece is of course . . .Tim Tebow.

New Year’s Celebration

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Season this year. As we approach the new year, my wish to you is peace and happiness throughout all of 2012!

Holiday Tea

Ingredients:

5 bags of your favorite tea (I used Earl Grey - Black Tea)
6 cups water
3/4 cup sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
1 1/2 cups orange juice
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice

Method:
Bring first 4 ingredients to boil in heavy large saucepan over high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Boil 6 minutes. Remove from heat. Add tea bags. Cover and let steep 10 minutes. Discard tea bags. Add orange and lemon juices to drink. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm before continuing.) Using slotted spoon, remove whole spices. Serve hot.

I just can’t get enough of ….. Pottery !

Each year I look forward to attending the Fall Pottery Show sponsored by the Colorado Potter’s Guild. Many local artesians have beautiful pottery pieces on display. I spend so much time walking around the show room. It’s amazing how many pieces you miss the first time through … there is just so many gorgeous items!

Making final selections was difficult. These are the pieces I picked to come home with me!

The plate is handcrafted by my favorite artist “Chancy”. I have quite a few of her pieces. She always comes up with new pieces each year. I just love her new design featuring “Aspen Leaves”.

This next piece was so clever. A dish for olives and a place to put the pits!

Also, a perfect size serving dish. The dip bowl is attached. Great for when you are serving to a smaller crowd with limited serving space. Love it!

And finally I picked up this darling little dish. Good for just about anything. I love the fluted edge and sweet little leaves embossed inside. It reminded my somewhat of geranium leaves. It’s color is mint green. I could see placing some cranberries in it for the holidays!I am linking to the following parties:

Beautiful Snowfall in November!

I am been absent during the month of October due to Wedding Preparations! But I couldn’t resist the urge to put together a Fall Tablescape and serve up a yummy dinner of comfort food – a steaming hot bowl of homemade chili.
This is what we woke up to this morning !

The Wedding is about 2 weeks out and my daughter and I are busy performing all the last minute details. She is living in San Diego and will be home the week of the wedding. She is super organized and I know everything will come together beautifully.
My tablescapes are a wonderful way to “step away” from the hustle and bustle of Wedding planning.

Tablescape Items

Dinner Plate, Salad Plates, Dessert Plates & Bowls - Home Goods

Woven Chargers – Home Goods

Flatware – Ross

Stemware – Steinmart

Napkins – King Soopers (local grocery store)

Placemats – Home Goods

Home Made Chili

2 lbs ground beef or ground turkey – 2 medium onions, browned and drained

Add:

2 cans diced tomatoes

22 oz. tomato juice

1 large can tomatoe sauce

2 cans chili beans

Stir in:

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp paprika

2 tsp chili powder

1 tsp salt

Simmer for 2-3 hours. Add water if too think. Sugar improves flavor. Makes 8-10 servings.

Autumn Leaves Table

I am loving the cooler temps that we have been experiencing the last couple of days. Every time I take a step outside I love to take in a big deep breath of fresh air. I sure hope this wonderful weather stays with us for a while longer.
As the temps begin to drop, we soon will see beautiful changes to our trees and shrubs. The colors of fall will soon be apparent in the display of magnificent leaves!
I created a tablescape this week that captures a wonderful array of leaves all decked out in fall colors .

I made this leaf runner several years ago. Very easy to do. I purchased a table runner the dimensions I needed. Then I bought many packages of faux leaves in great colors. And simply hot glued them to the runner.

Our Personal Fire Truck

We have owned the Gunnison KOA Kampground in beautiful Gunnison, Colorado for the past 8 years. This past spring my husband purchased his very own Fire Truck! Yes, you did hear right . . . we are now the proud owners of a FIRE ENGINE. I know, I can’t believe it either.
He uses it to water the flowers and the lawn. But the hi-light of each day is when he turns on the lights and sirens and rides around the kampground giving everyone – young and old, rides.

Where do I keep my dishes?

Over the last two years (since I began blogging), I have acquired quite a collection of dishware, flatware, stemware, linens and other assorted odds and ends needed for that perfect tablescape. You all know what I’m talking about!!

As my collection grew, it quickly became apparent that I was running out of room. My main problem was that I started stashing my dishes etc. all over the house. And you all know what happens then – you forget where you place things or even worse, you forget you even have them.

Sadly, I have purchased a item – stashed it somewhere – forget that I had it and ended up purchasing it again! UGH.

So last winter I commissioned my son to build custom shelves so that I can see everything “at a glance”.

This picture was taken as I stood in our garage looking into the laundry room. I wanted to get a full view angle of the built in shelves. I recently painted my laundry a pretty salmon color. I wanted the shelves painted a crisp white to pop against the salmon background.

After measurements were carefully taken, the construction began in the garage.

Then I began the fun part, filling them up!!

I measured so that I could fit a case of water that was stacked 2 high and a 12pk of soda standing on end in the bottom area.

I lined each shelf with rubberized shelf liner. It works great with stemware!!

I even designated a shelf for all my cookbooks at just the right height. It is so nice having them all in one area. (Or at least most of them). I really have a fascination with cookbooks. I can’t get enough of them.

One of the great things about these shelves is that they are right off the kitchen. So everything is within easy reach to create lots of different tablescape looks along with yummy meals.

The Colors of Fall: Green & Gold

Since I began decorating for fall , I am crazy about the rich colors of green and gold. Add in a touch of crisp white and the entire table seems to come alive!

The Libby Creamer and Sugar I received from my Grandmother’s estate years ago. I was fortunate to find 4 matching stemware at a local antique mart. I used them today as candle holders.

Fruit and Sweet Cream Cheese Galette

I saw this gorgeous dessert feature in our Sunday Paper several weeks ago. I saved it knowing that our peaches are right at their peak. Raspberries and Blueberries gave it the perfect complement of color.

Ingredients:
1 pkg (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1/2 c confectioner’s sugar
3 Tbs. cornstarch, divided
1 whole egg, separated
2 Tbs. sugar, plus a little extra for sprinkling
1 tsp. vanilla extract or 1/4 tsp. almond extract
1 refrigerated pie crust from 14.1 oz box
2 cups fruit (pick one or mix thinly sliced plums, peeled peaches or apricots; or mixed berries such as blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. ( I chose peaches, blueberries and raspberries)

Directions:
Adjust oven rack to lowest position and heat oven to 400 degrees.
         Mix cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar, 2 Tbs. of the cornstarch and the egg yolk in a medium bowl. In a separate medium bowl, mix fruit, 2 Tbs. of sugar, remaining Tbs. cornstarch, and vanilla or almond extract.
         Unfurl pie dough on a lightly floured surface and roll to about 13 inches in diameter. Slide onto cookie sheet or pizza pan and spread evenly with cream cheese mixture, leaving a 2-inch border. Scatter fruit evenly over cream cheese mixture. Fold pastry border over the fruit. Brush dough perimeter with egg white and sprinkle with a little sugar.
          Bake galette until golden brown, about 30 minutes. Loosen with a metal spatula and slide onto a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm. (We chose to add a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream!!)

Touches of Fall

I am so excited for the upcoming Fall Season. It has always been one of my favorite times of the year. And even more so this year because we are celebrating our daughter’s wedding this November.

Last night I began pulling a few items out of storage to begin decorating around the house.
I am beginning with the hutch in our family room. Last Spring I transformed our hutch by added burlap backs to all the mirrors to create a softer look. See HERE. I added all white elements to create a fresh spring look.

I decided to keep the burlap backs to all the mirrors and add fall touches.

I purchased the Fall Dishes at Home Goods last fall.

Our Glorious Animals

Over they past 30 years we (our son and daughter) have had some interesting animals. Not just you average dogs and cats, oh no. We have housed gerbils, hamsters, fish, box turtles, a bird, an iguana, and rats . But now we have taken the love of animals to a whole new level.
Starting from smallest to largest here is our current family of glorious animals.

CHLOE
Chloe was born in September 2001. She will have been with us 10 years later this month. A stray rescue from the animal shelter, I call her my “empty nest” kitty. She arrived just as my oldest daughter, Katie, headed off to college.

HANNAH
Little Hannah is 15 years old. We received Hannah from a “puppy mill” *(didn’t know at the time) just north of Phoenix. They told us she was a Newfoundland / Saint Bernard mix. Our vet quickly filled us in that our dear little Hannah was a chow mix. Oh well! What were we thinking anyway!

ZOEY
Zoey is technically our son, Michael’s Australian Shepherd. She just turned one and is as sweet as ever. Extremely loyal and very quick. A great addition to the family.

As a Puppy

Our family’s 1st Australian Shepherd. Cora is what’s known as a red merl. Her colors are spectacular. We received Cora when she was two years old. Her original owner wanted to use her to herd his sheep. Lucky for us, she wasn’t' very good at it. She is currently 4 years old.

BABY LAMBCHOP
We received Baby Lambchop in Gunnison when she was 4 days old. We bottle feed her until she was able to take in solid foods. She is as sweet as can be. She weighed in at around 10 lbs early on. She thinks she’s one of the dogs when we go on our daily walks.

DIETER and FRITZ
We inherited Dieter and Fritz from our Kampground neighbors who had the goats at the house they were renting at the time. The owner said the goats had to go. So we (my son and husband) took them in.

NORMAN

Norman is a male Holstein cow that we received over a year ago at the Kampground. My husband has a buddy who owns a dairy farm in Windsor, Colorado. The thought was to have “little” Norman over the summer for the campers to pet, feed and enjoy. Then Norman was to go back to his herd in the fall. Well, you know what they say about animals when you give them a name …. 1200 pounds later, Norman is a well loved member of the pet family.

So there you have it. A full run down of our Animal Menagerie. Fortunately, only the dogs and cat go back and forth from the city to the Kampground. The lamb, goats and cow are now permanent inhabitants at the Gunnison KOA Kampground.

Day One of Fun

As the family members begin arriving, the fun is beginning. It doesn’t take much to entertain our family. My husband and son, Michael have created several “Fun Toys” that bring smiles to the faces of the “men” in the family. I must say they are very clever in design.
The first one that they demonstrated yesterday was the “Trebuchet” or as I called it – The Catapult. They had assistance in the design by one of our work kampers – he must have been an engineer in his earlier life.

After we enjoyed this little demonstration, our focus changed to the next “Toy” which is called the “Potato Launcher”. I told you, it doesn’t take much to entertain our family.

Both my son, Michael and husband, Dave gave it a try. It literally launches a potato 500 feet into the air.

We all enjoyed our family time together.

On the next post, I will be introducing you to some “four legged” members of our family. I think it would be fun going from the smallest to the largest – And here’s a hint …. the largest weighs in at 1200 lbs!!!

Celebrating 80 years . . .

Our family is getting together for a long weekend to celebrate my husband’s dad’s birthday – he just turned 80! We are all staying at the Gunnison KOA Kampground in Gunnison, Colorado. The temps are beautiful and it is going to be fun getting together with family and friends. Here are a few camera shots I took early this morning.It’s a fun place to stay, not to mention that we’ve owned the Gunnison KOA Kampground for the past 8 years. We have 126 RV / tent sites and 12 Cabins.
We also have a large playground area with an upper deck area for adults to enjoy while the children play.

We are going to have an awesome weekend!

Outdoor Relaxing for Two

Though the days in Colorado are still very hot. In the evenings it does feel very comfortable in the shade. Perfect for an outdoor dinner for two. I created this tablescape on our patio which gives us just enough shade to relax and enjoy.

A “Travel Theme” Bridal Shower

This past weekend I had the privilege of seeing my daughter at her first Bridal Shower hosted by her six incredible bridesmaids. I offered to have “their” Bridal Shower at my home so we could utilize our “outdoor space” to accommodate the 25 women who had RSVP’d to this wonderful occasion.

My daughter, Katie, has always loved to travel. She has been all over the world. So her bridesmaids wanted to plan a Bridal Shower that revolved around Katie’s love of travel.

My kitchen island was where the “In Flight” Beverages were being served: Iced Tea, Pink Lemonade and Orange Juice and Champagne for Mimosas.

Katie’s Wedding Colors are Grey, Raspberry and White … so the bridesmaids incorporated these colors into the travel inspired decorations.

Next they set up a beautiful Buffet Style spread that was lovingly designated as “In Flight Snacks”.

They made darling labels for all the food items. They wanted to achieve a travel theme with a vintage style, so all the plates were white but with a twist . . . we pulled from 5 different sets that I had. The flatware was also purchased at thrift stores so nothing matched, but that was the plan and it was charming.

Outside I had rented tables, chairs and linens for everyone. The 20 x 20 tent we had purchased several years ago. It all came together beautifully.

Following a scrumptious brunch style buffet, my daughter, Katie, opened many lovely gifts from family and friends. Even her grandmother (my mom) flew in from Perry, Georgia and her aunt (my brothers wife) flew in from Naperville, Illinois to join us in this fabulous occasion.

They even made the Bride-to-be a bouquet of ribbons from all her gifts to use at the Rehearsal.

As the guests we leaving, there was one more stop to make. The baggage claim area had little party favors for each guest to take home. Each little suitcase contained an assortment of candies – some of Katie’s favorites.

The Bridal Shower was a complete success thanks to the hard work of six very special ladies, Meagan, Katie, Jen, Renee, Julie and Amanda pictured here with the bride-to-be, Katie.

Strawberry Poppy Seed Chicken Salad

I have grown to love this seasonal salad that can be purchased at Panera (here on the west coast). I had a few friends over for dinner the other night and wanted to prepare something light yet satisfying. The Strawberry Poppy Seed Salad from Panera popped into my head. This really isn’t hard to “re-create”.

My Version of the Strawberry Poppy Seed Chicken Salad

Lettuce Greens (I like to use Leafy Romaine )

Strawberries, Blueberries, Pineapple Tidbits and Mandarin Oranges

Slices of Seasoned Roasted Chicken Breast

Sliced Pecans

Brianna’s Poppy Seed Dressing (yummy!)

Combine all of the above ingredients and Enjoy!

Shared Idea and Antique Mall Treasure

My home is constantly evolving as I am sure many of yours are. I am always spotting little treasures that are finding their way into new vignettes. Yesterday I had some extra time while my son was at an appointment, so I headed over to an Antique Mall that I don’t visit frequently.
This time my kitchen received a new addition!

Do you spot it? Look high . . .

This darling little hen lamp “jumped” into my arms. She was marked 15% off – it was a great price.

The reason I was so attracted to it was because of a post I read from a fellow blogger that I saw at Susan’s Metamorphosis Monday over at Between Naps on the Porch this past Monday.

The post was … Let the Light Shine In over at Melissa’s Heart and Home. It was all about the use of darling lamps all over her home. She had placed an “unexpected” mini lamp on top of her refrigerator. When I spotted this little gem I knew it would be perfect on top of my refrigerator! Thanks Melissa!

I placed the little hen lamp on a wooden riser, added a little greenery and a Red/White Hen Plate from my favorite Potter, Chaucy . She makes beautiful designs of 3D functional pottery. The cookbooks are from another favorite of mine, author Pam Anderson.

Her red checked lampshade even matches the other lamp I picked up at another Antique Mall earlier in the year. This lamp shade I actually covered with the red check fabric. See the DIY HERE.

Before this change, the top of my refrigerator looked like this.

The rooster that used to be perched high atop my refrigerator has found his way over to the corner vignette.

The tulips are left over from Easter. They still look lovely!

Fresh New Look for the Hutch

So many of you wonderful bloggers have lined the backs of your hutches. I've seen beautiful wallpapers, gorgeous paint colors and several others have added fun fabrics.

The hutch that we have in our family room has mirrors on the backside which over the years created beautiful reflections of the items inside.

Here is a photograph taken last Christmas. Even though the reflections are nice, there always is a lot of glare when I try to photograph here.

So I have decided to make a change with the mirrors . . .

I purchased some foam board and burlap at Hobby Lobby.

I measured inside each mirrored area of hutch. The foam board was easy to cut. Then simply stapled the burlap on to each square.

It was so easy. And if I want to change out the look or return to the mirrors I can just "pop out" the squares!

Now the fun part begins, DECORATING!

Since we are officially celebrating Spring, I wanted a fresh springlike look. I am seeing WHITE, WHITE and more WHITE in many of your vignettes.

I am really enjoying how it comes ALIVE with all the white accents.

Kitchen Table Easter Vignette

With Easter Sunday a week away I have placed a few Easter items around the house to enjoy! One area that I created a change to is with my kitchen table. I added the extra leaf and arranged my chairs “side-by-side”. This enables a vignette to be placed at the end of the table without taking away from those who are seated at the table.

The Bunny Plate is from a local pottery artesian Chaucy. I have purchased several of her pieces over the years.

Here’s the table set with the chairs “side-by-side”.

The white vase is from Home Goods. The daisies were purchased at Hobby Lobby. I picked up the bunny and clear domed cloche at Ross. The lantern and candle are both from Crate and Barrel. And as I mentioned earlier, the bunny plate was made by a local potter, Chaucy.

Kitchen Window Treatments and New Windowsill Vignette

Hello everybody and Happy Spring! I have finally finished up the 2nd window treatment above my kitchen window this past weekend. My entire family had special projects for the weekend. My husband worked in the backyard - pruning. My son was in town with some custom made shelves he is making for me (soon to be complete!) And my project was to finish the window treatment above the window.

The new window valance above the kitchen window has two box pleats to better suit its size. The window valance above the kitchen sliding door has three to balance out the longer length.

My Favorite Cupboard ~ hosted by Sheila / Note Songs

I am so excited to share with you "My Favorite Cupboards" !!! Sheila at the beautiful blog Note Songs is so sweet to host this party. Her parties are very special and always draw huge crowds. I love sharing in the excitement with all who participate.

My Favorite Cupboards all happen to be in my Kitchen. As we go through each one I will point out little ideas / conveniences / tips that work well for us.

The box holds all of our daily vitamins, prescriptions and other assorted "health type" stuff. It's a easy way to keep everything together and organized. I also have written on the top of each bottle the drug name and when it expires so it can be pulled at a glance.

You'll also notice on top of our everyday dishes, which are "Mikasa French Countryside", I have placed a stack of paper plates. My husband often doesn't like to "dirty" a plate when he just has a sandwich or some other light snack. So he opts to grab a paper plate instead.

My corner cabinet holds many spices and storage pieces. I have started to date my spices so I don't keep them "forever". (Which I have been known to do!)

More spices and water bottles above the microwave.

Our coffee mugs are all conveniently placed directly above our Cusinart Coffee Maker. Of course my favorite mug currently is the Hotel Del Coronado -

I had so much fun putting together this bright and cheerful tablescape this week. As I look out back I can see brand new buds on our Japanese Elm tree. Spring is definitely on its way.

A Toast to the Happy Couple!

Hello everyone. I know I have been neglecting you all in "blog land" for a short time. However, I hope you will understand. It has been for a very good reason.

On Saturday March 12th our daughter, Katie became "ENGAGED" to a wonderful man . . . Brian.

So we've been going "fast and furious" getting organized to prepare for their Big Day!

It took place in sunny San Diego, CA on the beach at the Hotel Del Coronado . (how romantic!)

Katie sent out an email describing the day as it unfolded . . .

As promised more details! Brian proposed on Saturday morning and it was such a perfect day. He made an appointment for me to have a pedicure on Saturday morning, which seemed normal as I had had a couple of stressful days during the week, so I just assumed that he was doing something nice, which is typical of him. (He’s always looking out for me!) I woke up early and rode my beach cruiser to the appointment and when I arrived a card was waiting for me with a short note and directions to head to the flower shop next. I thoroughly enjoyed my pedicure, but was anxious to head to the flower shop to see what was going on. When I arrived at the flower shop a beautiful bouquet of flowers was waiting for me and another card. This card directed me to the bookstore. At the bookstore they had a book of love poems for me and of course another card. This card said to meet Brian on the beach behind the Hotel Del Coronado. At first I wasn’t sure I would be able to find him, but then I saw him just relaxing on the beach and made the trek through the sand with my bike to meet up with him. He was very casual and started small talk, asking me if I enjoyed the scavenger hunt – the pedicure, flowers, etc.

Then we started talking about his list of things to do for the day and started packing up our things to leave. Of course I thought the scavenger hunt meant a proposal, but when nothing happened on the beach and we started packing up our things I was slightly disappointed.

But just as we were packing up Brian said there was one more thing before we left and then he proposed! It was perfect. It was simple, it was Brian, it was me – It was just so us! He also had a bottle of champagne tucked away in his backpack and of course he forgot glasses so in true classy style we both took a sip from the bottle as a toast to our engagement. (This is also so us!)

Ladybug Tablescape

When I spotted these darling little ladybug plates a few months back at Ross, I snatched them up immediately. At the time they only has 3 salad size plates left. Since then I've been back to Ross (several different stores) to see if any additional salad plates would show up. Sadly, I never saw any more. :-(

So as I was pondering my Ladybug Tablescape for 2 - it came to me ...... eureka!!! I have a wonderful kitchen island with 3 bar stools - why not set up the ladybugs with 3 placesettings at this wonderful well loved space??!!

The centerpiece was an idea that I had after seeing a post by Lacy over at The Inspired Nest. Please stop by and visit her post on creating this lovely wooden toolbox.

I was fortunate to find the ladybug creamer and sugar also at Ross.

Springtime Fresh!

I also like to change up the displays around the house for the seasons. This week the family room mantel and wall space near the mantel were chosen for a fresh new look.

This was the "winter" look on the mantel before the Springlike changes.

Now this is how it looks today.

Very simple and understated. Also, I shopped the house for all of the pieces except the daisies. Hobby Lobby has a beautiful selection of spring flowers all at 50% off.

One other change I made was from an idea I found at Kim's Savvy Southern Style . She hi-lighted an fun project from her "Wow Us Wednesday week 4 " party. Julie over at Life at Fire Lake Camp created one of these Cottage Willow Basket Vases. I couldn't wait to give it a try.

Thanks Julie for the wonderful tutorial. And thanks to Kim for hi-lighting this beautiful little Cottage Willow Basket full of flowers.

I can't believe I finished this!!

Last weekend was a very special day for my daughter and I. We participated in the "Run the Republic 2011 Fight for Air Stair Climb" to support the American Lung Association.

This is the Republic building, where we were climbing the stairs to the top....

Each person (and teams) are lined up and start in 8 second intervals. You start walking the stairs single file on the right - passing may occur on the left side of the stair well.

There were rest stops / water stations / restroom facilities on the 10th, 17th and 35th floors.

There are 56 floors - and a total of 1098 steps from the bottom to the top. We took "quick" breaks about every 10 floors.

We finished the stair climb in 26 minutes .... 3 minutes faster than our time 3 years ago!

It felt great to be finished and at the top!

... Pillows!

I have begun to look for them on every shopping trip I take. They are so fun to decorate with.

I've added a bit of interest to a dark leather loveseat in the family room with a grain sack pillow from Home Goods ~

A fun embroidered bird pillow from Pottery Barn sits on the antique rocking chair in the upstairs landing ~

Wool pillows with a warm rich checked design flank both ends of the living room sofa. They pillows actually came with the sofa, along with two matching silk striped pillows for spring ~

A fun microsuede lumbar pillow from Ross has a floral "tone on tone" design. It adds extra comfort to an over-sized green leather in the upstairs TV room ~

I have also been know to use them in "unconventional ways". This past post featured a small Fall pillow on an easel as part of a tabletop display. It's on the small chest in the living room. As they say at JCP - "Who knew?"

Copper ....

... it adds just the right sparkle to my kitchen.

I visited our local Antique Mall today to see what treasures were going to "speak to me". They were having a big sale and many of the vendors had their booths marked up to 50% off.

This solid copper mold had the sweetest little bird engraved on it. I had never seen anything like it. I came across the usual molds .... lobsters, chickens and fluted pieces. They were plentiful. But this piece was so unique.

Sorry about the glare. It's hard to photograph copper - it's so shiny!

It now sits nestled amongst my fruit in the corner of the kitchen.

Problem solved ....

Last week I had a delivery from Pottery Barn. The man in the "BIG BROWN" truck stopped by with a beautiful TV Media Center. I loved how it had it's own shelf for extra TV components and didn't cover up the register on the floor.

The new piece was perfect for my family room. The only thing that wasn't so perfect were the "ugly cords". It is just hard to hide a necessary part of all electronics.

While shopping in TJ Maxx last weekend, I came across the perfect solution ... a new comfy oversized chair in a rich shade of "Red Terracotta". I always felt that our family room needed extra seating, and that corner would be the perfect home to a new chair.

But, that chair was too big to handle by myself. Would Mr. "Step Inside" agree to yet another piece of furniture? (remember we just purchased the TV Media console from Pottery Barn). So I decided to "sleep on it" to see if I really needed/~~wanted~~ that chair.

My daughter came over last night and I remembered that beautiful (did I mention perfect) Red Terracotta chair from last weekend. So we decided to drive up to TJ Maxx and see if it was still there.

And guess what!

The cords are still there, but my new big comfy oversized chair hides them well. The chair even matched with the rug pretty well. It truly has solved the problem. Now I'm on the look out for the perfect pillow! Maybe something monogrammed?

Now if only the "curtain fairy" would stop by and remove those "ugly vertical blinds". Do the projects ever end? ;-)

I too ... have torn off the covers of perfectly good books!

I have obtained so many clever and inspiring ideas while perusing through many of your wonderful blogs over the past several months. Recently, all the craze has been "dismantling" old worn books and leaving them "cover less" (Ooooo!) So today I jumped on the band wagon.

The idea I had for my torn cover books was borrowed from a Ballards catalog that I received a while back. They had shown placing books in a clear glass container.

I changed up the look on the small chest I have in the living room.

I purchased the reindeer moss at Hobby Lobby. Did you know that they now have mobile coupons that can be pulled up on your smart phones? I received an extra 25% off my purchase.

The twigs were FREE! I cut them from tree in our back yard!

The painted tole plate was purchased awhile back at a local antique shop. I shopped the house and took it from my bedroon dresser. I had my perfume bottles and lotions on it.

The vintage binoculars were found on Portobello Road in London. It's an Outdoor Antique Shoppers paradise!

I have found many great tassels at Tuesday Mornings. They have a great selection of them and great prices too!

Window Treatment DIY

I mentioned a week ago that my next project would be sewing new window treatments for the sliding door in my kitchen and for the window above the kitchen sink. Thus far I have completed 1/2 of the project. The window treatment above the sliding door is finished.
This is the before picture of very "dated" window treatments that were quite stylish in their day.

I purchased fabric that coordinted well with the exisiting sheer that hangs below the topper.

Since I didn't have an actual pattern, I thought it would work best to create my own using an inexpensive tablecloth purchased as Ross.

My window treatment for the sliding door is going to include 3 box pleats. So I began my measuring the length of my board (96" x 8"). This is a standard board that can be purchased at Home Depot.

My dining room became my central work station. I took the tablecloth and cut out three sections. When sewn together they would be 96" in length + 16" (for the 2 sides) + 30" (3 pleats - 10 inches each).

With my pattern pieced together I was ready to make measurements on the board to create my finished pattern. I marked the center (48") the center pleat, then worked back to where each side pleat was going to be (24"). At each side 24" mark and the center mark I added 10 additional inches to account for each pleat.

Now I was able to take my pattern and cut out my fabric. My dining room became my central work station. On several days I had a helper providing me support.

Next came the lining. I purchased white - black out lining. Not only did it provide the much needed thickness so the light did not shine through, it also provided a little extra weight so the window treament hung nicely.

When lining the window treatment, cut out a piece that is the same size as your window treatment and sew right sides together at the bottom. Then turn inside out and be sure to press so the fold is about 1/2 inch up so that your lining doesn't show.

Next the pleats are made at the designated marks: 24", 48" and 72". fold in 5 inches from the right and 5 inches from the left to form your box pleat. Then press.

The sides are sewn and the top is basted. Then the entire window treatment is simply stapled to the board using an electric staple gun. The entire window treatment is installed by attaching three "L" brackets to the wall.

And here is the finished product.

I may add some trim along the top edge at some point. But for now I am going to begin working on the window that sits over the kitchen sink.

Favorite Kitchen Gadget - Happier than a Pig in Mud!

It's perfect for those evenings when it is either too cold to grill outside or when we just don't want to take the time for the charcoal to heat up! (Yes - my husband loves the flavor of meat/chicken/ribs - when cooked with charcoal).

It conveniently sits right on the kitchen counter. And plugs right in nearby. Beneath it has special "skewers", one for rotating hotdogs or sausages. And the other side is for rotating Shis-ka-bobs. I have extra skewers so that I can use 10 of either type.

A drawer beneath each of the skewers pulls out for easy clean-up from any "drips".

I like how the teflon top can either be used flat (for pancakes, french toast etc.) or it can be flipped to give you grill marks.

Its cleanup is a breeze, because it lifts off and can easily be placed in the dishwasher. It even has a drip pan for grease that is collected off to the side.

This is by far my Favorite Kitchen Gadget. I'm looking forward to viewing everyone else's gadgets!

I had a Delivery Today!

Last December we purchased a new TV for Christmas. At the time I wasn't sure exactly what type of media console I wanted to place it on so I simply used a sideboard that we already had in the family room to set the new TV on.

Since it wasn't made to hold the components that go with a TV, I had to set the DVR and DVD player on a separate stand right next to the sideboard. The sideboard even had a place to set bottles of wine ... not quite right for having a TV set on top.

So I came across the "perfect" Media Console at Pottery Barn. It came today and was super easy to put together. Just screw on the legs!!

It has the perfect shelf down below to place all the components!

It looks great next to the lamp I just received from Ballards last week!

Now if I only could figure out what to do about those ugly cords. I do think I need to replace the white cord with a brown one?!

I'm off to find a new home for my sideboard. Hopefully on the first floor. It is so heavy to move.

Valentine Dinner for Two!

The Kitchen's Coming Together!

Last week I showed you my kitchen light transformation. To see Click Here. Now I have created a few kitchen vignettes to begin tying everything together. I still have three "major" decorating projects left for my kitchen. One I will share with you at the end of this post. It's "next" on my to do list.

The white kitchen scale, Vintage Red Mixing Bowl and Demijohn were purchased at our local Antique Guild. The little ceramic rooster is from Ross.

The wooden bird house and potted silk flowers are from Home Goods. The painted bird is from Hobby Lobby (50% off). And the sweet little white painted adirondack chair was purchased on my recent trip to visit my daughter who had an apartment on Coronado Island, CA. The Apothecary Jars are all from Ross. The filler fruit and pot-pourri are from Home Goods. The rooster lamp is a DIY and was purchased at the Antique Guild. To see the tutorial Click Here.

Above the refrigerator I have a large ceramic rooster from Home Goods. An assortment of cookbooks placed in a metal oblong bucket which is also from Home Goods. One of my favorite cookbook authors is Pam Anderson. One of my favorites is her "Perfect Recipes for Having People Over". She has several cookbooks out and writes a column in the Sunday paper - USA magazine section. A spray of greenery finishes off the look.

Overhead above the cabinets in a old world urn filled with faux grapes and greenery. And Vintage Metal Kitchen Canisters.

Above the cabinets in the corner site a couple of cream roosters. I bought them as a set at Tuesday Morning's. The yellow urn was purchased at Steinmart and was the rooster plate and stand.

On my kitchen island I have a tray that serves as mail station. I made a liner with the same fabric I used on the lampshade and "secret stash" container. (Have you looked yet to see what's inside?)

Now I told you at the beginning of this post that I would reveal what my next project is going to be. Well hears a hint ....

If you guessed new window treatments , you're absolutely right. I am going to start on them this week. The outdated swags have to go. I will post the new window treatments when they are completed.
